Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta)
The beach is a narrow spit of land, which forms a natural barrier between the fresh water delta of the Dalyan river and the Mediterenian. It is one of the main breeding grounds for Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) in the Mediterranean and is therefore often referred to as “Turtle Beach”.
Above the river’s sheer cliffs are the weathered façades of Lycian tombs cut from rock, circa 400 BC. The ruins of the ancient trading city of Kaunos are a short boat trip across the river. The journey will take about 45 min’s through the green channels like labyrint called African Queen passages. This is where the movie African Queen was filmed in early 50’s. Sailing through the channels will give you the feeling of being in adventure with İndiana Johns. Dont worry about the croks, our team have killed them all.
The story of King Kaunos and his twin sister Byblis
According to mythology Kaunos was founded by King Kaunos, son of the Carian King Miletus and Kyane, and grandson of Apollo. Kaunos had a twin sister by the name of Byblis who developed a deep, unsisterly love for him. When she wrote her brother a love letter, telling him about her feelings, he decided to flee with some of his followers to settle elsewhere. His twin sister became mad with sorrow, started looking for him and tried to commit suicide. Mythology says that the Calbys river emerged from her tears.
Iztuzu Beach known as Dalyan Turtle Beach
The south of Dalyan on the Mediterranean coast, lies (Iztuzu) Dalyan Turtle Beach, near the village of the same name is a popular area for sunbathing and swimming. There are regular boat and minibus services to the beach. Visitors should be aware of the wooden stakes in the beach to mark nesting sites. The road route is particularly scenic, offering views of Sülüngür Lake. In 2008 İztuzu Beach was proclaimed winner in the category Best Open Space (Europe) by The Times because of the eco-friendly exploitation of the beach. In 2011 Dalyan and İztuzu Beach were proclaimed Best Beach Destination of Europe by Dutch holiday assessment website Zoover.
The beach is well known for the Caretta caretta (Loggerhead sea turtle), an endangered species that has existed for about 45 million years. International animal protection organizations monitor and protect the turtles’ nesting grounds in Turkey. The beach is closed between 20.00 and 8:00 hours during the period that the turtles lay their eggs and hatchlings go out to sea (May to October)

Tour Reviews
Perfect day in Dalyan by boat
Well organized trip. Picked up at 8.00a.m by a comfortable coach. Stopped for lunch, which was included in the price. Sailed on down the beautiful river, stopped to look at the fabulous rock tombs. Drifted on down the river towards the Mediterranean sea . A spectacular sandy beach. The sea was very warm for swimming. l would highly recommend booking excursion to Dalyan at least once during your stay in Turkey.
We did this day trip September 2017. What a fantastic day! We were welcomed onto the boat which was clean (and had clean toilets), the staff were really helpful. We used the sun beds to relax while we travelled to our first stop which was a rocky outcrop where the braver amongst us could jump into the sea (I didn’t ). A decent lunch was provided (but nothing for vegetarians ☹️other than chips and salad). We then sailed onto a beautiful beach which was famous for young turtles hatching. We didn’t see any turtles on the beach but saw the most beautiful adult turtle swimming under and around the boat when we got back. Eventually, we passed the cave tombs at Dalyan. These were hauntingly spectacular. The journey there was amazing, such a beautiful place. The mud baths was our final stop. Fun but we spent the next three days trying to get mud out of places we didn’t know mud could get.
If you’re anywhere near Dalyan this trip is a must. The perfect day.
