Pamukkale and its thermal pools
There is a warm water pool, numerous mineral baths and a great deal of small natural water springs, which are flowing down from the top of the hill. Pamukkale, which is often called the “Cotton Castle”, is comprised of white travertine patios that originate from the carbonate minerals of the water springs. Since antiquated times people used to visit this famous SPA-town to cure various sicknesses. Tourists take their shoes off and walk down slowly along the slippery travertine slope. This is a one of a kind spot on the planet where for many thousands of years mineral-rich water dissipating of the ground shaped an intricate travertine cascades, which look like a snow-white castle.
Ancient City of Hierapolis
A trip to Pamukkale is very attractive to ancient history lovers, as you will have a chance to see the remains of the Roman old city of Hierapolis. Archaeologists think that this city was built by one of the Pergamum Kings. The King Telephos’s wife’s name was Hiera, hence the name Hierapolis. The city was dedicated to the god of wine Dionise in Byzantine period. Initially, some buildings on the site of Hierapolis were built in the second thousand BC. It was in 190 BC, when the king of Bergame founded here a city called Hierapolis.
The magnificent city was later destroyed by an earthquake and rebuilt. Then it became a part of the Roman Empire. Visiting the Hierapolis includes strolling through the biggest antiquated Roman necropolis (an ancient graveyard) in Turkey. Walking by foot for 2km, tourists will see various tombs and sarcophagi, a complex of antient bath, Roman and Byzantine gates as well as an ancient theatre, which could accommodate 10 000 visitors. In 1988 Hierapolis was proclaimed a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
While in Pamukkale, you can also swim in the mineral waters of the antiquated Pool of Cleopatra (this is optional). There are sections and architraves of the colonnade at the bottom of a natural pool, which are clearly seen through transparent water. Mineral water in the pool has a temperature of the human body (around 36C) and is rich in calcium. The Cleopatra Pool is famous for its renewing and reviving properties. Pamukkale warm pools cure ailment, rickets, cardiovascular, neurological, skin and gastrointestinal sicknesses, lumbago, psoriasis and dermatitis.

Tour Reviews
PAMUKKALE is Amazing Place
Booked tour from Brendan (2.5 hours by a nice coach one way) but worth the trip to see the main Turkish wonder and the historical city of Ierapolis. Completely relaxed in the hot waters of the antient Kleopatra pool as well as paddling in various termal pools – well worth the early start.
